About Out hats
Our Hats are made from 100% Australian Wool, Leather or Cotton Sweat bands and linen.
To find the right hat size for you, you will need a cloth measuring tape. Measure the circumference of your head at the place you would wear the hat. Take the measurements and refer to our size chart.
1. Basic Cleaning and Dust Removal
- Brush Regularly: Use a soft-bristle brush to gently remove dust and dirt, brushing in a clockwise direction to avoid damaging the wool fibers. For dark hats, a dark brush is best, while lighter hats benefit from a lighter brush.
- Lint Roller: Use a lint roller or masking tape to remove lint and small particles that can cling to wool, but be gentle to avoid damaging the wool.
2. Spot Cleaning
- Small Stains: Use a damp cloth or sponge to dab (not rub) small stains. Avoid soaking the wool, as too much water can alter its shape.
- Dry Dirt or Dust: For dry dirt, let it dry completely and then gently brush or dab it off.
- Deep Cleaning: For serious stains, it's best to take the hat to a professional cleaner who specializes in wool. Wool and leather are sensitive to harsh chemicals and should not be exposed to regular washing methods.
3. Dealing with Moisture
- Avoid Heavy Rain: Wool is naturally water-resistant, but it’s best to avoid heavy rain to prevent both the wool and leather from absorbing too much moisture.
- Drying the Hat: If the hat does get wet, shake off excess water, reshape it gently, and let it air dry away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Never use a dryer, heater, or hairdryer, as these can shrink or warp the wool and dry out the leather.
4. Leather Sweatband Care
- Wiping Down: Use a damp cloth to gently wipe the leather sweatband to remove sweat and oils, which can build up over time and make the leather brittle.
- Conditioning: Every few months (or when the leather feels dry), apply a leather conditioner sparingly. Use a small amount and let it absorb into the leather. Avoid applying too much as it can soften the leather excessively, leading to a loose fit.
5. Storage
- Shape Maintenance: Store your hat on a hat rack or in a hat box to help it retain its shape. Avoid stacking hats on top of each other.
- Avoid Moist Areas: Store the hat in a cool, dry place. Moisture can lead to mold and mildew in wool and leather.
- Avoid Sunlight: Direct sunlight can fade the color of both wool and leather over time.
6. Handling and Reshaping
- Handling Tips: Handle your hat by the brim rather than the crown, as pinching the crown repeatedly can weaken and deform it.
- Reshaping: If the brim or crown gets out of shape, gently steam the wool by holding it above a pot of boiling water, being careful not to saturate the wool. Once slightly softened, gently reshape it with your hands and let it air dry.
7. Odor Removal
- Freshening the Hat: To remove odors, let the hat air out in a shaded area outdoors. You can also place a sachet of lavender or cedar in the hat box to keep it smelling fresh.
- Baking Soda for Odors: Place the hat in a bag with an open box of baking soda (keeping the hat and baking soda separated) for a day or two. The baking soda can help absorb any lingering odors.
